VIJAY SHINDE
Born in 1958 in Sholapur, Maharashtra, Vijay Shinde completed his Fine Arts degree at Sir J. J. School of Art in 1982. Shinde’s early works were portraits and figurative works, but the artist slowly shifted towards nonrepresentational works. His work are deeply inspired from the Indian ethics, philosophy and values. His oeuvre is an artistic expression connecting the heaven and the earth and the divine forces driving them. These mystic elements prompt the artist to establish an abstract relation on canvas.
Shinde’s later works from 2005 are about the spirit of awakening. The artist says: “If there is no awakening and urge to change bitter things, hopelessness would result. So, there has to be a belief that things can change. I as an artist believe in goodness, humanity and human values. When these values deteriorate, I feel pained. The pain also reflects in my work, but ultimately, I always feel there is always hope.”
Vijay Shinde has won multiple awards such as the National Award Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi in 1984, Biennale Award, Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal in 1986, Fellowship – Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi 1987, Maharashtra Gaurav Puraskar, State Government of Maharashtra, 1990 Senior Fellowship Award, Government of India, and New Delhi in 2000.
